  • Candidates must be physically and legally able to drive a vehicle and able to learn proper firearm handling.
  • To obtain POST Basic Certification, the candidate must be a United States citizen, at least 18 years old, fingerprinted for a criminal history search, not have a conviction for a crime that could have led to imprisonment in a federal or state penitentiary, be of good moral character as determined by a thorough background screen, have a high school diploma or equivalent, and possess or be eligible for a valid Montana driver's license.

  • Candidates convicted of a felony or misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, or subject to a qualifying protection order, are not qualified for the position.
  • Candidates with specified prison or institutional sexual abuse conduct, qualifying coercive sexual activity convictions, or civil or administrative adjudications of such activity are not qualified for the position.
Responsibilities
  • Supervise adult male felons in the custody of Montana State Prison, on or off the property.
  • Perform security duties for the safe, orderly, and cost-effective operation of the grounds, including conducting inspections and searches of inmates, buildings, and grounds; conducting security observations; preparing incident reports, disciplinary documentation, counts, and logs; operating security equipment; recognizing critical behavior; restraining and controlling offenders; and responding to emergencies.
  • Enforce and follow rules, regulations, written and oral directives, post orders, special instructions, and policies and procedures for routine and emergency operations.
  • Serve on the Unit Management Team and oversee the basic needs and welfare of adult male felons in the custody of Montana State Prison, on or off the property.
  • Participate in case management and classification procedures.
  • Provide intervention by facilitating or overseeing counseling, medical care, first aid, clothing and laundry, janitorial and housekeeping supplies, inmate transportation, meals, movement, jobs, and other required services.
